Protoys project workshop takes part in the Maker Faire

The result of the measurement with an interferometer is an interference pattern, which can be ring-shaped, for example (picture). The difference in the individual rays' optical paths until they merge determines the shape.

PhoenixD's student project workshop Protoys gives visitors to the Maker Faire in Hanover an insight into optics. The team is bringing along a Michelson interferometer. With it, one of the most famous experiments in the history of physics was carried out, the so-called Michelson-Morley experiment. The Maker Faire takes place on 19 and 20 August (weekend) from 10 am at the Hannover Congress Centrum.

The Michelson-Morley experiment is one of the most famous experiments in the history of physics. With the help of a Michelson interferometer, scientists proved that the speed of light is the same in every reference frame. This finding was one of the fundamental assumptions that Albert Einstein used for his special theory of relativity.

Modern Michelson interferometers, for example, in the GEO600 project near Hanover, are still used to detect gravitational waves.

Around 1,000 exhibitors will present their countless do-it-yourself ideas and projects at 220 stands at the Maker Faire. The subject areas include 3D printing, coding, cosplay, electronics, handicrafts, hardware hacking, Internet of Things, laser cutters, Lego, model making, sustainability, Raspberry Pi, robotics, smart home, steampunk and upcycling. In addition to the exhibition, there will be numerous lectures.

The Maker Faire will take place on Saturday, 19 August (10 am - 6 pm) and Sunday, 20 August (10 am - 5 pm) at the Hannover Congress Centrum (Theodor-Heuss-Platz 1, 30175 Hannover). You will find the Protoys team at the hannoverimpuls stand (stand 17).
