NDR team shoots at HOT for TV report on artificial intelligence

A three-person television crew from the North German Broadcasting Corporation (NDR) filmed a news report at the Hanover Centre for Optical Technologies. The topic: the use of artificial intelligence in medical technology.

HOT Managing Director Prof. Bernhard Roth (left) and his research assistant Anatoly Fedorov Kukk (right) presented their research on detecting black skin cancer to the TV crew. They gave their approach for an "optical biopsy", which uses three optical technologies in a skin scanner to diagnose melanoma without surgery.

"Currently, no other technology can provide non-invasive diagnostics. Our approach is, therefore, a real innovation in the field," says Roth, who is also researching new optical measurement techniques for broad applications, e.g. in medicine or environmental analytics, in the Cluster of Excellence PhoenixD.

The new skin scanner works with artificial intelligence, which makes it possible to improve diagnostics continuously. "It is our goal that in the future, examinations will no longer have to be carried out exclusively by a doctor, but also by non-medical personnel," says Anatoly Fedorov Kukk, a research associate in the project.

On Wednesday, 21 October 2020, NDR broadcasted the television report at 7.30 p.m. in the programme "Hallo Niedersachsen".
