PhoenixD member Dag Heinemann has been appointed chair of the conference on "Photonic Technologies in Plant and Agricultural Science". The event will take place during the world's largest optics and photonics trade fair, SPIE PhotonicsWest, in San Francisco (USA) in spring 2024. The deadline to submit conference abstracts is 19 July 2023.

From the micromechanical investigation of the cell wall to large-scale hyperspectral imaging of plant populations: Optical technologies have become of central importance in plant and agricultural science. "Our conference, "Photonic Technologies in Plant and Agricultural Science", aims to attract scientists working in this interdisciplinary field, focusing on technological innovations and new applications of optical techniques", says Dag Heinemann. "Furthermore, since most biophotonics conferences have focused on biomedical applications and mammalian systems, I am very excited to join international colleagues at a first-of-its-kind conference on "green" biophotonics."

Researchers can submit their publications on topics like: Laser weeding, micromanipulation of plants (e.g. for molecular delivery of ablation studies), optical disinfection in the food chain, lasers for pest management, spectroscopic evaluation of nutritional values, food quality and ripening, 3D sensing of plants and plant organs (using optical methods such as OCT, LIDAR, stereo cameras, TOF) as well as image recognition of agricultural pests and abiotic stress and optical sensing techniques in vertical farming.

The ten-member conference committee also includes another researcher from Hanover: Merve Wollweber from the Laser Zentrum Hannover e. V. (LZH). The LZH is a partner institute of PhoenixD.

Further information on the conference is available online here.  The deadline for conference contributions is 19 July 2023.
