Leibniz University Hannover and the Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education (Kiel) are organising the 7th European Physics Olympiad in Hannover. At the international scientific competition, outstanding pupils solve theoretical and experimental problems. From 16 to 20 June, more than 170 participants from 37 countries will compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in Hannover.

Among them are young STEM talents from Azerbaijan, Brazil, Iceland, Kazakhstan, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Vietnam. The competition is open for high school students up to a maximum age of 20. Each country can send a team with a maximum of five participants and a team leader. In previous years, the competition was held in Slovenia (2022), Latvia (2019), Russia (2018) and Estonia (2017).

The Cluster of Excellence PhoenixD is one of the supporters of the Physics Olympiad, along with the Cluster of Excellence QuantumFrontiers, and guides young STEM scientists through its laboratories. Spokesperson Prof. Dr. Uwe Morgner will speak to the group of international participants in the atrium in the main building on Friday at the start of the competition.

The PhoenixD research cluster will present itself with a joint stand with QuantumFrontiers and the Collaborative Research Centre DQ-mat on Friday, 16 June, from 5 to 9 pm, and on Tuesday, 20 June, from 10 am to 2 pm. Then the competitors can ask questions about the new Bachelor's programme Optical Technologies: Lasers and Photonics, and the established Master's programme Optical Technologies, which is taught in German and English. The young talents can test their knowledge at the wheel of fortune and have their picture taken in the photo(nen)box with fluorescent elements under black light.

You can download the programme for the opening ceremony on Friday, 16 June here and that for the closing ceremony on Tuesday, 20 June here.
